Question No 2 by Alexandros Alavanos
Subject: Network for epidemiological surveillance
Decision 2119/98/EC
(1)
of 24 September 1998 deals with the creation of a network for the epidemiological surveillance and control of communicable diseases in the Community. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is spreading very quickly and there have already been reports of cases in European Union countries. It is also known that an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Health Ministers has been requested to coordinate the 15 Member States’ actions.
Does the Council consider that the network for epidemiological surveillance and control of communicable diseases set up by Decision 2119/98/EC has responded quickly enough to SARS? What measures have been recommended? What steps does the Council intend to take to control this disease?
