– An analysis provides very contrasting information. A handful of Member States, including Denmark, Netherlands, Austria and Sweden are very advanced; indeed, no petitions have been received from citizens in these countries expressing any concern about waste management. However, many other EU countries are far behind in their implementation of waste strategies and, in this context, the legacy of the past, and an excessive dependence on landfill options, linked to the need to change attitudes towards waste disposal, has caused serious breaches of EU legislation to occur. The directive is timely and very important.
