Based on the mandate with which it was entrusted by the Council, the European Commission held negotiations with the Republic of Guinea-Bissau to renew the Protocol to the Fisheries Partnership Agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, dated 17 March 2008. This new protocol, which the European Parliament has just approved, covers a period of one year from June 2011. It renews the terms of the previous protocol and contains a clause – which I welcome - allowing its suspension if human rights and democratic principles are not respected in Guinea.
