I voted for the regulation establishing technical and commercial requirements for credit transfers and direct debits in euros. I do actually think that in the digital age, we can demand that our European banks remove barriers to credit transfers and direct debits denominated in euros for transactions within Europe. By 1 February 2014, banks should have switched to a new Single Euro Payments Area and therefore offer the same prices for cross-border transfers as for domestic transfers. This is a concrete step forward for citizens who are seeing the idea of a Europe where trade is simplified between Member States becoming a reality. Just as trade and the movement of Europeans across Europe is increasing, money transfers are also increasing and their cost to customers varies or is non-existent depending on the Member State. This regulation establishes common rules and standards.
