I am voting for this report, since I believe it is essential to protect the interests of members of the public who put their life savings in banks. There has been progress made with the guarantee system and with means of making use of it, but more will have to be done either at the level of individual Member States or at European Union level. It is therefore essential that people trust and believe in the credibility of financial institutions: if not, withdrawals by depositors could jeopardise the financial stability of these institutions. Setting out common requirements that can be applied enables the Member States to have harmonised conditions, so as to avoid distortions of competition, thus protecting depositors and contributing to the stability of the financial system.
