The fisheries and aquaculture sector generates EUR 34.2 billion in annual earnings and provides jobs for more than 350 000 people in Europe. Environmental sustainability – improving the level of fish stocks – is a
sine qua non
of the economic and social sustainability of the sector. That is why the reform of the common fisheries policy should guarantee that stocks are fished in a sustainable way in order to ensure the survival of the sector and the future of coastal communities. It should be ambitious, consisting of clear, prioritised objectives that are measurable and time-bound.
