European Parliament
Kristiina Ojuland,
on behalf of the ALDE Group.
– Mr President, the political situation in Egypt over the past year has undergone a conceptual change. The transition from an authoritarian regime is moving in the right direction but is far from complete. Recent violent uprisings and the catastrophic events in Port Said tell a sad story.
Together with serious breaches of human rights, these events raise concerns about the further democratisation process and the transition of the regime. I would like to stress that the European Union should, and will, continue to support unconditionally reforms leading to democracy, the rule of law and social justice in Egypt. We therefore expect that the Egyptians will continue their efforts to decrease corruption and guarantee fundamental freedoms.
In my opinion, the next major step must be changing the current Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to a democratically elected civilian government as soon as possible.
