As a member of the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, I argued in favour of granting discharge to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). As I am very involved within the European Parliament on all matters relating to food safety, I visited the EFSA to find out more about how the agency operates, talk about its scientific opinions and bring up the matter of its financial management. I was able to observe the quality of the work that this agency does. However, a majority of my fellow Members has asked for the vote to be postponed in order to investigate a possible conflict of interest that might affect the running of the agency. This postponement will now give Parliament time to look into the agency’s accounts in greater depth.
