I voted in favour of this report. Market forces evidently have not managed to give rise to fair prices for cross-border telecommunications through economic competition. It is therefore right that the European Parliament should intervene and set ceilings for roaming fees. This is only meant to be one step in the right direction, however, in order to ensure that competition takes hold in this area and leads to significant falls in prices, perhaps even rendering roaming fees superfluous altogether. The timing of this decision has been well chosen – it comes just before the summer tourist season gets under way.
