European Parliament
A7-0154/2012
Ramon Tremosa i Balcells (ALDE ).
– Mr President, whether the FTT should be applied in Europe has been under discussion for years. Now it seems that this Parliament, at least, is going to support it.
I consider that the FTT would be better applied at global level, but I understand the practical difficulties of achieving such an objective nowadays. However, the way the FTT is implemented is fundamental to whether or not it will succeed. Government bonds and pension funds, in my opinion, should be exempt from it and the savings of our older citizens should also be protected. I hope that this will be taken into account in the trialogues.
I believe that the low tax rates under the FTT will mean that it does not provoke an exit of the financial industry from the countries that apply it. In the interests of pragmatism, and because of the extraordinary times in which we are living, the Catalan Liberal Party, which I represent, will support this FTT.
