Mr President, I would like to congratulate Anni Podimata and thank her for an excellent report. I very much welcome the European Commission’s position on this proposal. I also sense a new spirit in the Council. However, I would like to encourage the Danish Presidency to ensure that the Council, the Committee and Parliament continue to try and achieve a common position.
I am concerned at the difference in opinions within the European People’s Party: I am talking about various speeches, and speeches which were sometimes particularistic in nature, including statements such as ‘us Swedes’ or ‘we the Dutch’. I am glad that we now have the opportunity – instead of focusing on how to save millions – to speak about how to raise billions, which, as the European Union’s own resources, we can allocate to growth, new jobs and new development opportunities.
