I voted in favour of the Podimata report in the final vote. I support the idea of a tax on financial transactions as a way of making financial institutions share the costs of the economic crisis, for example, through a Tobin tax, the revenue of which would be used as a development aid and to combat climate change. The big problem with this report is that it suggests that the revenue from the tax should go to the EU; this is unacceptable. Taxation is a competence of the Member States and it should remain so. The revenue from any tax whatsoever on financial transactions should go to Member States themselves.
