Today’s vote has made the Caribbean island of Saint-Barthélemy the 26th overseas territory associated with the European Union; however, the euro remains its official currency and its citizens will continue to be Europeans. The change in status will bring economic and political benefits in particular, enabling Saint-Barthélemy to consolidate its relations with the other overseas countries and territories, African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries and outermost regions of the Caribbean, and will thus help to disseminate the European model and European values.
