I supported the adoption of the new directive on the single European railway area because the technical incompatibilities between states are a major obstacle hampering the rapidly growing rail freight market where cross-border traffic offers the best potential. They are also hindering the development of a broader European transport network. Increasing interoperability will mean that trains have to be able to operate throughout the whole trans-European network and will help cut operating costs significantly. I strongly support the vision presented by this directive on a European research and innovation policy for transport based on joint efforts striving towards a competitive, resource-efficient transport system.
