I voted in favour of the own-initiative report presented by Olga Sehnalová and Dieter-Lebrecht Koch on eCall: a new ‘112’ service for citizens, which will soon have been in development for 10 years. With the aim of improved protection for Europe’s citizens, eCall is a new Europe-wide in-vehicle alarm system that automatically alerts the emergency services in the event of a serious accident, sending the GPS position of the accident location. Overall, 2 500 lives could be saved each year in Europe. I welcome Parliament’s vote in favour of this system, which strengthens the EU’s role in the protection of its citizens.
