– I support calls for a free-of-charge emergency eCall system, which would alert rescue services to road crashes automatically. Such a system could help save lives and reduce injuries following serious road accidents. An in-vehicle eCall system would automatically alert emergency services to the location of accidents, which will enable victims to be treated by professionals as quickly and efficiently as possible. I believe that this system should be made available to all motorists across the EU. If introduced, we could see 2 500 fewer deaths a year and the severity of injuries would also be reduced. I now hope that the Commission will respond to calls from MEPs and come forward with some binding legislation on this issue.
