I support Mr Ransdorf’s report on the Eastern partnership, which provides a framework for relations between the EU and Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Belarus. Among them, the first four are already members of the World Trade Organisation whilst the last two are only observers. From the socio-political point of view, this area is still unstable, but the EU cannot avoid introducing partnership policies with it. This is, in fact, an area dominated by Russian influence and extremely rich in energy resources. Finally, it is likely that this type of EU policy will encourage these countries to carry out the much desired institutional reforms and modernisation.
