As a Member of the delegation of the
Fidesz
party to the European Parliament I, too, rejected the 2012–2015 animal welfare strategy at today’s European Parliament vote in Strasbourg. Compared to the European Commission Communication on which it is based, Parliament’s report contains more references to the introduction of new unnecessary mandatory animal welfare measures. These measures are contrary to farmers’ interests, because they result in additional costs and additional energy use, further deepening the competitive disadvantage of European producers to imports, and they are also unfavourable for consumers, because they cause food price increases.
