Today, Parliament wanted to stress that the rules on animal welfare must be applied scrupulously, with more severe penalties for offenders. Only in this way will it be possible to protect human health, preventing the spread of diseases related to animals and to antimicrobial resistance. The current national rules and regulations in the area need to be recast into a single European text that can protect farm animals and domestic animals, as well as stray dogs and cats, which are not currently protected by any European law.
